Setting Up a Wireless Printer

Setting Up a Wireless Printer - With so many computers and printers using bluetooth and wireless technology these days, many people have questions about setting up a wireless printer. It sounds intimidating, especially to someone who isn't familiar with setting up computers and hardware. But never fear, it is very easy to learn how to set up a wireless printer. Just a few easy steps and you are on your way to printing from anywhere within range of the printer.

Setting Up a Wireless Printer

First of you need to determine if you want to set up a wireless network or if you will be using bluetooth. If you are using a computer that is bluetooth enabled and you have a bluetooth printer, you simply make sure the printer is on and then have your computer 'find' the printer. This is done by going to the control panel on your computer and selecting printers then add new printer. You will get a dialog box that will ask if you want to add a local printer or a wireless or bluetooth printer. When you select the option for wireless or bluetooth, your computer will search for available printers. Your printer should pop up on the screen once it is located. It will then ask you to select the manufacturer and model of your printer so the printer driver can be installed. Follow the instructions that follow and your printer will be installed. When prompted, print a test page to make sure everything works okay.

If your printer isn't bluetooth enabled, you will need to set up a wireless network using a router. With a router there is one computer that acts as the server or main computer. The router and printer are hooked to this computer and the router sends out wireless signals for other computers with wireless cards to pick up. This wireless network can also be used to share files and internet connections.

There are several companies that make wireless router, but Linksys and D-Link are two that make quality products that are reliable. Usually the router will come with software or at the very least detailed instructions that will help you set up your wireless network. Once your network is set up you are good to go.

With a wireless network, you will be able to set up your printer the same way that we did for bluetooth printers. Just a note - the router must have power in order for other computers to connect to the remote printer and the internet. It is best if you leave the power to the router on at all times, unless you have a business then it would be wise to turn of the router at the end of the work day.

Setting up a wireless printer is a simple and painless job. In fact, you will be surprised how simple it is. With a bluetooth printer or wireless printer and network, you will be printing from almost anywhere in your home or office in no time.
